Greenstick Fractures

Injuries From Car Accidents In Atlanta

“I heard the doctor say the phrase ‘greenstick fracture’ – what does that mean?”

A greenstick fracture is diagnosed when a bone cracks but doesn’t break all the way through. This type of fracture tends to be more likely in younger-aged bones, those of infants or children, that are more flexible. A greenstick fracture is named for the similar effect that occurs when you try to bend a green stick of wood and the outside splinters off while the rest of the wood bends.

It can be difficult to clearly distinguish a greenstick fracture after an automobile accident. A child can be vague regarding his/her injuries and pain, and the symptoms of greenstick fractures are common to other injuries – pain, swelling, bent or twisted limb and, in some cases, no symptoms.
