Canton, Georgia

The city of Canton is located in Cherokee County, the northwest part of Georgia, about 40 miles outside of the capital, Atlanta. According to the United States Census Bureau, its population is around 23,000, with about 75% reporting to be Caucasian. The median household income of those in Canton is around $43,000, more than 19% being below the poverty line, which is about 5% above the national average of persons living in poverty.

The city boasts a historic downtown, which has preserved many structures and documents dating back to before the Civil War. Initially, Canton was in the middle of Cherokee land, so not many settlers visited. When gold was discovered in Georgia, however, settlers flocked to the river. Federal troops eventually removed the Cherokee who had not moved away to a reservation, after which a permanent courthouse was established. After going through a number of names, the city was left with the name, Canton. This was a result of group of inhabitants who were attempting to replicate the silk industry of Canton, China. Though the silk industry was never hugely successful, the city did become an important manufacturing center.

The history of Canton can be further researched at the Cherokee County Historical Society, which provides housing and literature for all historical items worthy of preservation. If you so desire, the town has created a walking tour which that highlights the notable sites and shops by local artisans. The city also puts on various festivals to celebrate Canton history and many national holidays. The Cherokee Arts Center places special emphasis on remembering the Indian roots of the city.

Crime and Injury

Fortunately, Canton crime statistics have showed a downward trend in the last few years. There were about 83% less violent crimes committed in Canton than the national average. The property crimes committed were also significantly less; Canton had 35% less property crime than the national average. Currently there are around 100 sex offenders who live in Canton, making the ratio of residents to sex offenders, 100:1.

Though Canton has a decreased rate of crime, there are still many incidents that cause personal injury outside of violence and offense to property, such as vehicular accident. The state of Georgia has reported that in 2008, approximately 1,583 injuries were sustained out of 4,751 roadway accidents. Fifteen of these were fatalities, with five related to alcohol.
