Do You Have Enough Car Insurance?
Trying to figure out the terms of your insurance policy immediately following a car crash is probably not the best timing. Before a car accident even occurs, you should know your limits, deductibles, and how much will be covered. Insurance companies have different policies with different levels of coverage for different monthly premium prices.
You most likely want an insurance policy that you can afford, but you also want to make sure that there is enough coverage to protect you in the event of a crash. In Georgia, the law requires that drivers have $25,000 minimum bodily injury liability coverage and $25,000 minimum property damage liability coverage.
However, getting the minimum coverage can be risky. What if there is not enough insurance to cover you?
Understanding Your Insurance Policy:
- Liability Insurance – If you are responsible for a wreck, this insurance will pay for the property damage and bodily injury of others.
- Collision Insurance – Your insurance will cover damage to your car after your deductible, regardless of who is at fault.
- Comprehensive Insurance – Your insurance company will cover damage that occurs to your car due to theft, vandalism, fire, etc., but not damage from a car accident.
- Medical Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Insurance – This type of insurance pays for the medical expenses of you and your passengers, no matter who is at fault for the accident. This type of insurance also covers you if you are hurt in a pedestrian accident.
- Underinsured/Uninsured Coverage – This type of insurance pays for your bodily and property damages when you are injured in an accident with someone who is at fault but does not have enough insurance coverage or any coverage at all.
Remember, insurance only provides coverage up until the limits of your policy. Although you do not have to pay for any additional type of insurance other than what Georgia law requires, additional insurance may bring you peace of mind and financial security if you or one of your family members suffers serious bodily injury in a car accident.
